Abstract: Space-time coding array (STCA) radar introduces a tiny time shift across array elements. By transmitting an identical waveform, it can form a wide beam with full angular coverage with simplicity in engineering. However, in the practical environment, changes of the system will inevitably induce time shift errors. The impact of time shift error on STCA is studied. We deduce the beampattern error in condition of the deterministic error quantitatively and atttain the closed-form expression. The upper bound in condition of the stochastic error is derived. Besides, we analyze the transmit beampattern response and multi-dimensional ambiguity function to evaluate properties of the spatial coverage, the resolution and sidelobe level in range-angle domain in combination with the simulation results.

Key words: space-time coding array (STCA), time shift error, beampattern error, ambiguity function
