Abstract:

In the engineering application of obtaining significant wave height of X-band radar, how to obtain wave height without in-situ instrument calibration is always the problem that researchers have been devoting themselves to.The uncalibrated significant wave height retrieving method based on the radar shadow modulation characteristics can be applied in engineering, but the accuracy and stability of the radar image shadow threshold which is based on the use of difference operator is not ideal, which affects the accuracy of estimating significant wave height. To solve this problem, this paper improves the edge detection algorithm of radar images by using Prewitt operator, which can locate the edge of the shadowed and non-shadowed area more accurately. Verified by the experimental data obtained at two different places and two different time, using the Prewitt operator can improve the accuracy of image threshold and the precision of estimating significant wave height. The average absolute error between the two retrieval results and the buoy data is less than 15%.
