Abstract:

In order to ensure the correct transmission of most important data in case of the channel’s performance deterioration, a novel concatenated unequal error protection (UEP)scheme based on Raptor codes is proposed, and in this scheme the UEP designs in precoding stage and rateless coding stage are concatenated to increase the overall UEP performance and flexibility of code design. Then the upper and lower bounds on the maximum likelihood (ML) decoding error probabilities of most important bits (MIB) and less important bits (LIB) over the binary erasure channel (BEC) are deduced. Finally the UEP performance over the BEC and additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel is simulated. The theoretical deduction and simulation results show that the proposed UEP scheme can provide more strong protection for MIB at the cost of slight loss on the performance of LIB, and it has a better UEP performance than the alternative schemes of single UEP design in precoding stage or rateless coding stage.
