With the development of information technology, traditional geoscience methods of obtaining geographic information by field observation can no longer meet the needs of the current social development. Since the 1980s, with the advancement of spectral imaging technology, a large number of satellites and UAVs equipped with panchromatic, multispectral, or hyperspectral sensors have been developed and launched all around the world. Remote sensing has become a popular modern method by processing this information. It can quickly and timely obtain a large amount of accurate and objective geographic information, which is incomparable by traditional methods. Remote sensing has been widely used in forestry, agriculture, geology, mineral resources, hydrology and water resources, ocean, environmental monitoring, and other aspects, and has made a great contribution to the global economic and social development, as well as the sustainable development of resources. However, remote sensing still has vast space for development. Many fundamental issues and challenges concerning high-performance computing, information extraction, and application have not yet been identified and resolved (such as low utilization rate of information, slow information processing efficiency, and insufficient accuracy). Besides, combining remote sensing with new developments on big-data, artificial intelligence, and computer science, etc., is also desirable to embody the inherent advantages of remote sensing. Solutions to these issues are intensively pursued in this special section.
