Abstract:

The turbulence echo in wind profiler is very weak, so it is easily disturbed by ground clutter. To improve the effects of  target detection, it is analyzed that the ground clutter has the following characteristics: a narrow Gaussianlike  shape, symmetric distributing around the zero velocity point, spectra peak near the zero point, large gradients on both
sides of the spectra peak, and small gradient between two adjacent altitude layers. After that, a new synthetic  identification method is suggested for turbulence target detection in wind profiler. Its primary steps are as follows:  part the spectrum and average the power, then get minimum as the spectrum noise level| identify and classify the shape  and width of spectrum to remove ground clutter|  properly correct by the continuity rule to get the final result. The  test using radar data shows that the detected accuracy is satisfying, the results found from different beams are  symmetrical. The method can get reasonable results in weak echoes also.
